1 Corinthians 1:9

The context

Paul opens the letter to a divided congregation by giving thanks for what God has already done among them. The thanksgiving runs from verse 4 to verse 9 and names speech, knowledge, and gifts, then closes with the assurance that God is faithful. Verse 9 is the hinge into the appeals that follow.

What it establishes

It establishes that the Corinthians' standing rests on God's faithfulness rather than on their performance, and that the content of their calling is a shared life with the Son. The verse is stated as a fact about God, not as an aspiration for the readers.

What it does not establish

It does not say what that fellowship involves in practice. The phrase is left undefined here. Paul will spend the letter working out its implications for the table, for lawsuits, and for the body, which suggests the verse states a position rather than a program.
