The context

Paul is listing the resurrection appearances, and having named his own he interrupts the list to describe himself. The phrase about one untimely born has just been used of him. This verse explains why he ranks himself last, and the next clause attributes whatever he is to grace.

What it establishes

Paul describes himself as unfit for the apostolic rank because of his persecution of the church, and he does so without disputing his call. The self-description is rhetorical and theological at once.

What it does not establish

It does not establish a hierarchy of offices. The line is a piece of self-deprecation in an argument about resurrection, not a ranking of apostles or a claim about which letters he wrote.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
