1 Corinthians 4:5
The context
The Corinthian church has divided over leaders and is assessing Paul and Apollos. Paul has refused to be judged by the Corinthians' estimate and says his own conscience is not his verdict. Verse 5 gives the reason: the Lord's coming will bring hidden things to light and disclose motives.
What it establishes
It establishes that final assessment belongs to the Lord at his coming, and that human verdicts now are premature because the evidence is incomplete. Praise, in the same verse, is something a person receives from God rather than from a faction.
What it does not establish
It does not forbid all judgment. Paul has just named the Corinthians' boasting as a problem and will later direct them to expel an offender. The prohibition is against preempting the Lord's verdict on motives, not against every act of discernment or discipline.
