1 John 1:8-9

The context

The letter opens by insisting that God is light and that claiming fellowship while walking in darkness is a lie. In that setting two conditional statements follow: claiming sinlessness is self-deception, and confessing sin is met with forgiveness. The letter later addresses teachers who denied the seriousness of sin.

What it establishes

It establishes that sin remains a reality for those in the community and that confession is the stated condition attached to forgiveness. The ground of forgiveness is God's own character, described as faithful and just.

What it does not establish

It does not specify a required procedure. Confession is named without a prescribed form, audience, or officer, and the verse does not say that every consequence of a wrong is removed. Nor does it claim that believers never sin again; the next verses address that directly.
