1 John 1:9
The context
First John opens with the word of life, then presents the message heard from Christ as a message about light. The letter's opening argument runs through three claims: to have fellowship while walking in darkness, to have no sin, and to have not sinned. Verse 9 answers the second claim with confession and promise.
What it establishes
Forgiveness is tied to confession and grounded in God's character. The text names two divine attributes, faithfulness and justice, as the reason cleansing follows confession. The promise is not conditional on the quality of the confession or on any penance; it rests on what God is like.
What it does not establish
It does not prescribe a rite. Nothing here requires confession to a particular officer or in a particular form, and the letter's "we" is corporate as much as individual. Nor does the verse define what confession involves beyond agreeing about sin.

- ALL sins are forgiven if you ‘accept Jesus as your savior’, right? What about the non-forgivable sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit? We have a little CONTRADICTION problem here?!
