The context

The letter is written against teachers who left the community and denied that Jesus is the Christ come in the flesh. John calls them antichrists and treats their departure as revealing something rather than causing it. The sentence is retrospective: it explains a schism that had already happened, and it is written to steady those who stayed.

What it establishes

It establishes that belonging to the community is not a matter of proximity and that perseverance is a mark of the real thing. The logic is uncomfortable but clear: departure did not create the separation, it disclosed it.

What it does not establish

It is not a tool for reading hearts. The verse explains one specific defection over a specific denial, and it gives no license to declare every person who leaves a congregation never to have belonged. Applying it that way assumes a knowledge of others the letter does not claim.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
