1 Thessalonians 1:10

The context

The thanksgiving that opens the letter ends with a three-part description of the Thessalonians' conversion: they turned from idols to serve a living God, and now they wait for his Son from heaven. Verse 10 names the object of the waiting and the deliverance they expect.

What it establishes

It establishes that the earliest surviving letter of Paul treats the return of Jesus as a present orientation of a congregation's life, not as a speculative topic. The waiting is listed alongside service as a mark of conversion.

What it does not establish

It does not fix the timing or the sequence. The verse says he comes and delivers from wrath, and it gives no schedule. Paul's later correspondence addresses precisely the questions this sentence leaves open, which is evidence that it was not read as a timetable.
