1 Timothy 3:11-13

The context

The chapter lists qualifications for overseers and then for deacons, and this paragraph sits between them. It describes women who must be dignified, sober, and faithful in everything, then returns to deacons and promises blessing on those who serve well. The list is about character throughout, not about gifts or charisma.

What it establishes

It establishes that those who serve in the church's ordered ministry are assessed by conduct and reliability, and that the standards are not lower for women than for men. The concern is trustworthiness in a household and in a congregation.

What it does not establish

It is disputed who these women are. The most common readings are that they are the wives of deacons or that they are women serving as deacons themselves, and the grammar allows either. The verse does not settle the question of women's ordination in either direction.
