2 Corinthians 11:13

The context

Paul is defending his ministry against rivals who have arrived in Corinth with letters of recommendation and superior credentials. He has just said he will match their boasting. Verse 13 names them directly: false apostles, deceitful workers, and men who disguise themselves, with verse 14 extending the image to Satan disguised as an angel of light.

What it establishes

It establishes that Paul regarded his opponents as deceivers rather than as a legitimate alternative, and that the deception is described as a costume rather than a doctrine. The criterion implied is the message about Christ, which he has already said they preach differently.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that every theological opponent is a false apostle. Paul applies the label to teachers who brought a different Jesus and a different gospel. Nor does the verse give a test beyond the content preached.
