2 Corinthians 12:8-9

The context

Paul has been forced into boasting about visions and revelations, and then mentions a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan given to keep him from becoming conceited. He says he pleaded three times for it to leave. The answer he received is the sentence quoted here.

What it establishes

It establishes that unanswered prayer appears within the apostolic record itself, and that the stated resolution is sufficiency of grace rather than removal of the condition. Power is located in weakness, not alongside it.

What it does not establish

It does not identify the thorn. The text never says whether it was illness, opposition, or something else, and the guesses are later speculation. Nor does the passage promise that every refusal turns out well; it records one answer to one plea.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
