2 Corinthians 5:17
The context
Paul is defending his ministry and explaining why he no longer evaluates people by outward standing. The sentence sits inside the passage on reconciliation, where God is described as the one who reconciles through Christ and entrusts the message to others. The claim is compressed and programmatic rather than psychological.
What it establishes
It establishes that conversion is a creative act rather than a moral adjustment, and that the language of creation is being applied to a person's existence. The old and new are not phases of one continuous improvement.
What it does not establish
It does not promise instant completeness. The same letter's ethical sections assume ongoing struggle and change, and the manuscripts differ over the wording of the second clause. The verse asserts a new standing and a new order of life, not a finished character or an untroubled interior.
