The context

This belongs to the same stretch as the saying about walking by faith, where Paul weighs courage against the desire to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. The metaphor of the tent runs through the paragraph. The verse states a preference rather than a doctrine in systematic form.

What it establishes

Paul expects to be with Christ in a way that makes death desirable, and he treats that presence as the goal of his confidence. The hope is personal and relational, not merely a release from suffering.

What it does not establish

It does not detail the intermediate state. Whether Paul describes a condition between death and resurrection or compresses the whole hope into one phrase is disputed, and the verse says nothing about what that presence is like.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
