2 Peter 3:8
The context
The letter answers scoffers who point out that the promised coming has not arrived and that things continue as they always have. The author replies with a psalm text about divine time and then with an argument about patience. This verse is the hinge between the objection and the answer.
What it establishes
The apparent delay is relativised by a claim about how God reckons time, and the argument then turns to patience and repentance. The verse is offered to reframe the waiting rather than to explain it away, and it does not deny that the wait is real.
What it does not establish
It is not a conversion table. The comparison is a psalm quotation about God's eternity, and it cannot be used to compute dates or to turn a thousand years into a unit of prophetic arithmetic.
