Acts 15:28-29
The context
The Jerusalem meeting has heard Paul and Barnabas, then Peter, then James, and has reached a decision about what to require of Gentile believers. The letter is drafted for the churches and carries the decision in the first person plural. The list that follows names four things to abstain from.
What it establishes
The passage shows a community resolving a dispute by argument, testimony, and a shared judgment that it attributes to the Spirit. It also shows that the requirements imposed on Gentiles were deliberately limited.
What it does not establish
It does not establish a standing pattern for later assemblies. The rationale for the four items, whether ritual purity, table fellowship, or something else, is disputed, and the letter is a specific settlement rather than a constitution.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
