Acts 16:14
The context
Acts 16 narrates the arrival at Philippi and the search for a place of prayer by the river. Paul speaks to the women gathered there, and one of them, a dealer in purple cloth from Thyatira, responds. Verse 14 contains the narrative's explanation of her response, and her household's baptism follows.
What it establishes
It establishes that the narrator attributed her attention to divine initiative rather than to persuasion alone, and that a woman operating a trade becomes the first named convert in the city.
What it does not establish
It does not describe how the opening worked. The clause is a narrative aside, not a psychological account, and the same chapter describes others responding without such a note. It is not a template for how conversion always occurs.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
