Acts 17:17

The context

Paul waits in Athens for Silas and Timothy, and verse 16 says his spirit was provoked by the abundance of idols. Verse 17 describes his practice: reasoning in the synagogue with Jews and devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with whoever happened to be there.

What it establishes

The verse establishes a method rather than a message. Paul goes where people already gather, uses argument rather than proclamation alone, and addresses both the synagogue and the street. The next verse notes the philosophers who overheard him and wanted more.

What it does not establish

It does not record what was argued. The content of the marketplace conversations is not given, and the verse does not say how they were received beyond the curiosity of verse 18. It is a summary of activity, not a transcript, and not a model to copy.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
