Acts 5:40-42
The context
The Sanhedrin has just heard Gamaliel's advice: leave these men alone, because a movement of human origin will collapse on its own. The council takes the counsel and still has the apostles flogged, then orders them to stop speaking in the name. Verses 40-42 report what happened immediately after the release.
What it establishes
It establishes the apostles' response to punishment: they counted the dishonor a privilege, returned to the temple courts, and kept teaching daily, in public and from house to house. The prohibition was heard and ignored as a matter of settled conviction.
What it does not establish
It does not establish that suffering proves a message true. Gamaliel's test cuts the other way too: movements of merely human origin also die. The passage records endurance, not a criterion of truth. Nor does it make defiance of authorities a general Christian duty.
