Colossians 1:17
The context
This verse continues the hymn of the preceding lines. Having said that all things were made through him and for him, the passage adds that he is before them and that they cohere in him. The next verse turns to his relation to the church as head.
What it establishes
It establishes priority in time and a continuing relation to the created order: he is not only before it but presently sustaining its coherence. The claim is about him, not about the world's independence.
What it does not establish
It is not a scientific statement. The verse claims that created reality holds together in Christ without describing a mechanism, and it should not be read as anticipating any particular cosmology. Nor does the passage say how the sustaining relates to ordinary physical causation.
