Colossians 2:6

The context

After the dense argument about fullness and philosophy in the previous chapter, the letter turns to exhortation. Verse 6 makes the transition with a single sentence that assumes the readers' beginning and asks for consistency with it. The following verses add images of rootedness, building, and thanksgiving.

What it establishes

It establishes that the letter's ethic is derived from its doctrine: the manner of receiving is the manner of continuing. Nothing new is being commended, only the same Christ received at the start and walked in since.

What it does not establish

It does not specify what walking looks like. The sentence is a transition, not a code; its content comes from what precedes and follows. A reader who takes the verse as a rule for judging others has turned a summary into a standard the letter does not provide.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
