Colossians 3:24
The context
Colossians 3 gives a household code, addressing wives and husbands, children and fathers, slaves and masters. The instructions to slaves run from verse 22 and are unusual for their length. Verse 24 supplies the reason: the real master is Christ, and the recompense is an inheritance.
What it establishes
It establishes that the letter reframes servile work as service rendered to Christ, and that it promises a reward in the language of inheritance, a term normally reserved for family members. The slave is addressed as an heir, which the surrounding culture did not do.
What it does not establish
It does not abolish the institution of slavery. The verse works inside the arrangement and changes the terms on which it is endured. A reader who takes it as a critique of the practice is reading against the sentence, which assumes masters and slaves continue to exist.
