Deuteronomy 8:2

The context

Moses addresses the generation born in the wilderness, on the plains of Moab. He recalls the manna, the lack of water, and the discipline of the march. Verse 2 gives the purpose of the forty years: to humble the people and to expose what was in their heart, whether they would keep the commands.

What it establishes

It establishes that the wilderness was purposeful rather than accidental, and that its aim was testing and formation. The verse also establishes that the test was not for God's information but for the people's own disclosure, and that dependence on daily provision was part of the lesson.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that hardship is always discipline for sin. The generation under judgment is in view, but the book also presents the wandering as formation for their children. Nor does the verse explain every difficulty; it names a purpose.
