Ephesians 4:15

The context

Ephesians 4 turns from the unity of the Spirit and the gifts given to the church to the goal of maturity, then to the contrast between the old and new life. Verse 15 sits between the picture of children tossed by every wind of doctrine and the call to put off falsehood. The chapter's concern is a body growing together.

What it establishes

Truth and love are joined in one action, and growth is directed toward Christ as head. The verse sets the alternative to instability: not more information but a manner of speaking and a direction of growth. Neither truth-telling nor affection is allowed to operate without the other.

What it does not establish

The participle may not mean "speaking." It can be rendered "being truthful" or "maintaining truth," and the difference matters for how the verse is applied. Nor does the verse define love or license bluntness; the same chapter commands gentleness. It joins two things without specifying the technique.
