The context

The letter's ethical section, which urges a walk worthy of the calling and then contrasts the old life with the new. Verses 20 to 24 form a single sentence in Greek, and verse 21 is its middle clause, appealing to what the readers had already been taught.

What it establishes

It establishes that the letter grounds its ethics in instruction the readers had received, and that the instruction is identified with a person rather than with a code. Truth here has a location, and the location is Jesus.

What it does not establish

It does not tell us what the teaching was. The sentence refers to catechesis without quoting it, and the content has to be inferred from the surrounding exhortations. A reader looking for a summary of doctrine in this verse will find a pointer instead.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
