The context

The plague narratives have run their course and the Passover has been eaten. Israel departs from Rameses toward Succoth. Verse 37 gives the count of men on foot, besides dependents, and the next verse notes a mixed multitude that went up with them. The numbers are large and have been much discussed.

What it establishes

It establishes that the exodus was a mass movement of whole households, not a small escape, and that it began at a named place with a stated destination. The presence of a mixed multitude indicates that the departing group was not ethnically uniform.

What it does not establish

It does not settle the size of the population. The figure has been read literally and also as a term for a smaller body, and the total it implies is hard to fit with the region's archaeology. The text reports a number; its reading is disputed.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
