Galatians 2:16
The context
Paul is recounting a confrontation at Antioch, where Peter had withdrawn from eating with Gentile believers under pressure from a delegation. The argument that follows turns on what makes a person acceptable, and Paul states the conclusion three times in a single sentence for emphasis. The repetition signals that he expects opposition.
What it establishes
It establishes that table fellowship between Jews and Gentiles rests on a shared basis of acceptance rather than on the Gentiles adopting Jewish practice. The doctrine is being argued in a dispute about who may eat with whom.
What it does not establish
The key phrase is disputed. Whether the Greek means faith in Christ or the faithfulness of Christ has been argued at length on both sides, and the difference is not trivial. The verse also leaves works of law undefined and does not say how this claim relates to judgment.
