Genesis 2:17

The context

The verse belongs to the Eden story before the woman is formed, in the paragraph that gives the man the garden and its one prohibition. It follows the permission to eat freely and precedes the account of the animals and the making of the woman.

What it establishes

The story grounds human moral obligation in a word spoken by God, and it attaches a stated consequence to disobedience. The command is specific, and the penalty is named in advance.

What it does not establish

The phrase about the day does not map onto immediate death. The man and woman do not die that day, and the sense of the expression, whether sentence, process, or capital exposure, is genuinely disputed.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
