Genesis 22:12
The context
Genesis 22:12 is the interruption. Abraham has raised the knife, and the angel of the LORD calls from heaven twice, by name. The command is reversed before it is carried out. The verse then supplies a reason: the angel now knows that Abraham fears God, because he has not withheld his son, his only son.
What it establishes
The verse establishes the outcome of the test and names the fear of God as the thing being tested. It also introduces the principle later readers found in the story: obedience that does not withhold what is dearest. The withheld hand, not the raised knife, is the evidence.
What it does not establish
It does not establish that God lacked knowledge. 'Now I know' is the language of a story told in human terms, and reading it as a report about divine cognition sets it against other texts. It gives the angel's verdict, not a doctrine of divine ignorance.
