Genesis 4:17
The context
Genesis 4 traces Cain's line after the exile, listing his descendants and their innovations: tents, music, and metalwork. Verse 17 records the birth of Enoch, the building of a city, and its naming. The genealogy that follows is concerned with culture and craft, and the chapter traces the spread of human invention.
What it establishes
It establishes that the first city is credited to Cain's line, and that the passage functions as an origin story for urban life and the arts. The line is presented as inventive and outside the chosen family.
What it does not establish
It does not say the city was large. The word can denote a settlement or a fortified place, and the verse gives no population. The passage is an etiology of cultural beginnings, not a chronological record of urbanisation.
