Genesis 41:57
The context
Joseph has interpreted Pharaoh's dreams, been raised from prison to office, and stored grain through the years of plenty. The famine now bites, and the narrator describes traffic into Egypt from the surrounding regions. The same chapter has already called the famine severe over all the lands, and these arrivals set up the reunion with his brothers.
What it establishes
The narrative uses wide scope language to convey the severity and reach of the famine as the story tells it. It also establishes Egypt as the place where the family of Jacob will be preserved, which is where the book is heading.
What it does not establish
The idiom is not a globe. 'All the earth' in this kind of narrative means the known world of the story, and the verse cannot be used to argue for a worldwide food crisis or worldwide travel.
