Hebrews 11:29

The context

The chapter is a catalogue of faith from Abel onward, each item introduced by the same formula. Verse 29 turns from Israel's ancestors to the nation at the sea: they passed through as on dry land, while the Egyptians who tried it were swallowed. The next verse moves to Jericho.

What it establishes

It establishes that the crossing is remembered as an act of faith by a whole people, and that the same water which opened for them closed on their pursuers. The verse is used in the chapter's argument that faith is what the faithful have always lived by.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that faith produced the miracle, as though the water obeyed the people. The chapter attributes the event to God and names faith as the posture of those who obeyed. Nor does it identify the route or the site.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
