Hebrews 12:2

The context

The letter has reached its exhortation section, and chapter 11 has just run through a list of the faithful. Verse 2 turns from the witnesses to the figure they point toward, and the athletic image introduced here carries into the following verses about discipline and running.

What it establishes

It establishes that Jesus is presented as both the one who starts faith and the one who brings it to its goal, and that his endurance is grounded in the joy set before him and the shame he despised.

What it does not establish

It does not say faith is a quantity he supplies. The two nouns describe his relation to faith as its origin and its finisher; they do not describe an internal substance transferred to believers. The verse is about his position in the story, not a psychology of belief.
