Hebrews 2:17
The context
Chapter 2 has established the Son's solidarity with humanity and his sharing of flesh and blood. Verse 17 draws out why: he had to become like his brothers in every respect. The word used for what he accomplishes is a sacrificial one, and the letter will spend chapters unpacking it.
What it establishes
It establishes that the incarnation is presented as necessary for a priestly work, not as an end in itself. The two adjectives, merciful and faithful, describe the work from the two sides it faces, the people and God.
What it does not establish
It does not explain how the sacrifice works. The verse names the act and the effect, making propitiation for the sins of the people, without describing the transaction. Theories of atonement built on this word go beyond what the sentence states, and the letter does not supply the mechanism.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
