The context

Hebrews is preaching, a sustained argument with warnings woven through it. Chapter four urges readers to enter God's rest and not repeat the wilderness generation's failure. Just before this verse the word of God is described as living and active, judging the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

What it establishes

It establishes universal divine knowledge and the accountability that follows from it. The image is of exposure: nothing is concealed, and the creature stands open before the one to whom account is given.

What it does not establish

It does not describe a final courtroom. The verse states God's present knowledge and the fact of accountability; it does not outline judgment procedures or timing. Nor does the passage equate God's word with a book; the exposure belongs to God himself, who sees.
