Isaiah 11:1
The context
Isaiah 11 follows the oracle about Assyria in chapter 10, which ends with the image of a forest cut down. Chapter 11 opens with a stump and a shoot, and then describes a ruler endowed with the Spirit and a creation restored to peace. The chapter is a vision of a future order, not a report of one.
What it establishes
It establishes that the Davidic line is pictured as felled but not finished, and that the coming ruler is traced to Jesse rather than to David by name. The Spirit's endowment is listed in three pairs.
What it does not establish
It does not name the figure. The oracle gives no date and no personal identification, and the peace imagery that follows is visionary. The New Testament applies it to Jesus; the verse itself supplies a lineage and a hope.
