Isaiah 43:10

The context

Isaiah 43 speaks to Israel in exile, named and claimed by God, passing through waters and fire. The chapter opens with comfort and a promise of gathering from east and west. Verse 10 answers the summons to bring the nations to court: Israel is the witness, and there is no god beside him.

What it establishes

It establishes that Israel's role is testimonial, and that the testimony concerns knowledge of God rather than military success. The verse also establishes the exclusivity claim in a courtroom setting: no god was formed before him, and none will be after.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that Israel's witness was faithful. The same book calls the people blind and deaf a few verses later, which is the prophet's irony. Nor does the verse predict a particular form of mission.
