James 1:27
The context
James 1 moves from trials and temptation to the call to be doers of the word and not hearers only. It warns about an unbridled tongue and about a religion that consists of talk. Verse 27 comes near the chapter's end and defines acceptable religion with two coordinate clauses, one social and one personal.
What it establishes
It establishes that the author defined religion in ethical and social terms: care for the vulnerable and personal integrity. The definition is given as a test, not as an optional extra.
What it does not establish
It does not dismiss worship or doctrine. The letter assumes gathering, prayer, and teaching, and the same chapter insists on hearing the word. The verse supplies a criterion for what counts as religion, not a complete programme for a congregation.
