John 3:16

The context

John 3 begins with Nicodemus coming at night, and the conversation moves from new birth to the wind, to the serpent lifted in the wilderness, and then to this sentence. Whether verse 16 is still Jesus speaking or the evangelist's own comment is disputed, and the speech runs on to verse 21 without a clear break.

What it establishes

The verse establishes the motive and the gift: love for the world, and a Son given, with believing as the condition of not perishing. It is the most compact statement in the Gospel of why the mission happened.

What it does not establish

It does not settle the extent of the atonement. The word for world carries several senses in this Gospel. The verse states God's love and the believing that saves; it does not define who can believe, or what becomes of those who never hear.
