John 10:25
The context
Set at the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, in the portico of Solomon. The authorities surround Jesus and ask him to say plainly whether he is the Christ. He answers that he has told them and that they do not believe, then points away from his words to his works.
What it establishes
It establishes that Jesus answered a direct question about messiahship by indirection, appealing to deeds done in the Father's name. The works are presented as testimony that is already available, not as something still to be supplied.
What it does not establish
It does not mean his words were unclear. The Gospel has him speaking plainly elsewhere, and the charge of obscurity is one he rejects in the same passage. The appeal to works supplements speech; it does not replace it, and the verse does not make doctrine optional.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
