John 10:27

The context

The setting is the Feast of Dedication, and the crowd has asked Jesus to say plainly whether he is the Messiah. He answers by describing his sheep rather than by claiming a title. Hearing, knowing, and following are given as the marks that distinguish them.

What it establishes

It establishes that belonging to Jesus is expressed in recognition and in movement, not in a single profession, and that the knowledge runs in both directions. The present tense of the verbs is notable: these are ongoing actions.

What it does not establish

It does not provide a test for assurance. The verse describes sheep; it does not tell a reader how to determine whether the description fits. Using it as a checklist for who is genuinely in tends to produce the anxiety it was not written to address.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
