John 10:27-28
The context
The shepherd discourse has just explained why some do not believe: they are not among his sheep. Verses 27 and 28 describe the sheep's response and the gift they receive, and they name the security that follows. Verse 29 adds the Father's hand, and verse 30 draws the conclusion that provoked the charge of blasphemy.
What it establishes
The verses describe the sheep as hearing and following, and they promise eternal life with the assurance that no one will snatch them out of the shepherd's hand. The security is grounded in the shepherd's keeping rather than in the sheep's grip.
What it does not establish
It does not settle the perseverance debate. The promise concerns snatching by others, and whether a sheep can wander away on its own is a different question, argued from Hebrews and elsewhere. Nor does the verse describe how assurance is felt; it states a fact about the shepherd's hand.
