The context

Lazarus has died, and Martha meets Jesus on the road outside Bethany. She states her belief in a resurrection on the last day, and he answers by locating resurrection in himself before calling her to belief. The exchange is about belief before it becomes a miracle story.

What it establishes

It establishes that resurrection and life are attached to a person, not only to an event at the end of history, and it joins belief in him to living even when one dies.

What it does not establish

It does not abolish physical death for believers now. Lazarus is raised and later dies again, and the verse itself concedes that the one who believes may die. Nor does it describe the state between death and resurrection, which the passage leaves unaddressed.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
