John 12:17

The context

Palm Sunday in John's Gospel. Jesus has entered Jerusalem, and the crowds have gone out to meet him. Verse 17 supplies a reason for the size of the welcome: the people who had been present at the tomb were telling what they had seen, and the crowd kept coming because of that report.

What it establishes

It establishes that the Gospel treats eyewitness report as the mechanism by which Jesus's reputation spread, and that the report had specific content, a dead man called out of a tomb. The claim is presented as checkable by people who could go and look.

What it does not establish

It does not say the report produced faith. The same chapter records that the authorities decided to kill Lazarus as well, because on account of him many were believing. Testimony divided the crowd rather than uniting it, and the verse reports a fact about numbers, not about conviction.
