John 12:37
The context
The public ministry is closing. Jesus has raised Lazarus, entered Jerusalem, and announced that his hour has come. Verse 37 summarizes the response to the signs: many had seen them and still did not believe. The next verses cite Isaiah on hardening and on the arm of the Lord.
What it establishes
It establishes that the Gospel does not claim signs were universally persuasive, and that unbelief persisted in the face of the works it has just narrated. The verse is a summary judgment on a whole period of ministry, not on a single encounter.
What it does not establish
It does not establish that evidence is useless. The same Gospel calls the signs pointers and says they were written so readers might believe. Nor does the verse explain why belief failed; the Isaiah citation offers one account.
