The context

Greek visitors have asked to see Jesus, and he announces that the hour has come. A voice answers from heaven, the crowd argues about what it heard, and he speaks of being lifted up. This saying comes in the summary of his mission that follows, and it is one of several light sayings in the Gospel.

What it establishes

It establishes a stated purpose for his coming: light for the world, with the result that the one who believes does not remain in darkness. Purpose and outcome are joined in one sentence.

What it does not establish

It does not say the light judges or excludes. The next verse explicitly denies that he came to judge the world, which qualifies any reading that turns this saying into a threat. Nor does the metaphor specify what darkness consists of beyond the contrast with belief.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
