John 14:11

The context

This is the farewell discourse, after the footwashing and Judas' departure. Jesus has told the disciples that he is the way, and Philip has asked to be shown the Father. The answer makes a claim about mutual indwelling and then offers a second ground for belief.

What it establishes

It establishes that the works are presented as evidence, not decoration, and that Jesus expects them to be sufficient for belief if his words are not. The claim about mutual indwelling is stated plainly and without explanation.

What it does not establish

It does not define the relation. The language of being in one another is not a metaphysical account of two natures or of a Trinity; those formulations came later and use other vocabulary. The verse asserts the union as something to be believed, not as something it explains.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
