John 14:14
The context
The farewell discourse has begun with the washing of feet behind it and the command to love. Jesus speaks of preparing a place, of the way, and of the Father seen in him. The promise about prayer comes in that stretch of reassurance, tied to his departure.
What it establishes
It establishes a promise of answered prayer addressed to Jesus, with the qualifier in my name attached. The asking is not generic; it is asking in dependence on him and on what his name represents.
What it does not establish
It is not a blank cheque. The phrase in my name is a condition, not a formula to append, and the surrounding verses tie the promise to the Father's glory. Some manuscripts read simply if you ask, without the me, a textual question the verse does not settle.
