The context

John 16 continues the farewell discourse: the world's hatred, the promise of the Advocate, the conviction of the world, and the disciples' grief at his departure. Verse 13 expands the promise of 15:26 and adds that the Spirit will declare things to come. Verse 14 immediately adds that he will glorify Christ.

What it establishes

The Spirit's teaching is presented as guided and derivative: he speaks what he hears, guides into truth, and glorifies Christ by taking what is his. Announcement of what is to come is included, which links the promise to the prophetic material in the Gospel and in Revelation.

What it does not establish

It is not a promise of new revelation apart from Christ. The next verse bounds the promise: the Spirit takes what belongs to Christ and declares it. Nor does "all the truth" mean that every later claim of illumination is self-authenticating. The verse describes a ministry, not a franchise.
