John 16:30

The context

Near the end of the farewell discourse, after Jesus has spoken of his departure in language the disciples find obscure. They interrupt with a confession that he is now speaking plainly and that they believe. Jesus answers in the next verse by asking whether they believe, and predicts that they will scatter.

What it establishes

It establishes that the disciples reached their confession by inference from what he had said, and that Jesus received it without disputing its content. Belief that he came from God is treated as the appropriate response to his teaching.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that their understanding was adequate. The immediate reply undercuts the confession, and the same night produces the desertion it predicts. The Gospel records the sentence as a step in the narrative rather than as a summary of mature faith.
