The context

The farewell discourse ends with this sentence before the prayer of chapter 17. Jesus has spoken of his departure, of sorrow turning to joy, and of the disciples scattering. Verse 33 names the reason the discourse was spoken and pairs a warning with a claim.

What it establishes

It establishes that the discourse is honest about opposition: tribulation is stated as a certainty, not a risk. The peace named earlier in the Gospel is set against that certainty rather than in place of it.

What it does not establish

It does not promise that the victory is visible now. The overcoming is stated in the perfect tense, as something already done, while the tribulation is present. How both are true at once is the Gospel's claim, not a resolution the verse supplies for the reader's circumstances.
