The context

John 17 is the prayer that closes the farewell discourse. It has prayed for the disciples themselves, and at verse 20 it widens to those who will believe through their testimony. The prayer then returns to glory and to the world's knowledge of the one who sent the Son.

What it establishes

The verses establish that the unity requested is grounded in the union of the Father and the Son, and that its purpose is the world's belief. The prayer is for a unity that is visible and that carries an evidential function, not merely for agreement in private.

What it does not establish

It does not specify a mechanism. The text does not say what form the unity takes, whether visible institution, common confession, or something else, and it does not promise that the world will in fact believe. The purpose clause states an aim, not a guaranteed result.
